Finally, ILL TONE's long awaited, debut album, “Bringin' the Hope Back”, is set to drop on February 27th, 2013! The album will be released on URBNET Records and features some of Canada's best vocalists, including Jasmin Parkin of 'Mother Mother', and Kyprios. Also featured on the album is Skryptcha, a talented Australian MC from Australia's 'Obese Records'. The songs, which are mainly focused around Tone's struggles with drug addiction, showcase the MC's lyrical depth and song writing abilities over hard hitting beats with great live instrumentation. His DJ, DJ Optimus Prime, laces a handful of tracks with skillful scratches that allow this release to bridge the gap between old and new school, while the live instruments give a rock-like feel to some songs.
On August 31st, 2012, Ill Tone released a 4 track EP titled, “Hope?”, which was a preview of “Bringin' the Hope Back”. The EP gained a very positive response from a number of reputable Canadian music publications, including The Georgia Straight and Hip Hop Canada. It was placed in to rotation by CBC Radio, and also 2 or 3 dozen other reputable stations across the nation. In October, the EP climbed it's way in to the top 10 hip hop releases for 10 or so of these stations, including the #1 spot on CJAM, CJSR, and CKXU. Tone is excited to release the full length album and is scheduled for his first Canadian tour in March of 2013 with Masta Ace, Wordsworth, Stricklin, & KIDS!
Between the EP and LP, Ill Tone released a free mixtape, “S.W.A.G.” (“Superficial, Wack, and Grandiose”). The mixtape was released online and was acclaimed by most who heard it. Quickly, “S.W.A.G.” breached the national top 10 list for hip hop releases on Canadian radio and became the #1 most spun hip hop record on many stations.
As well as making solo music, Ill Tone is formerly part of the hip hop group Broken Logic, which he co-founded in 2004 on Vancouver Island. He's known for bringing a very energetic, high octane set, and now has hundreds of performances around BC under his belt, with attendance ranging from smaller bar shows to larger outdoor festival shows of 5,000+ listeners. With a blend of consciously motivated, comedic, self reflective, and astoundingly honest lyrics, he has tailored his live set to appeal to a wide audience. In addition to performing live with his DJ, Tone also rocks a lot of his shows with a live band (electric guitarist, bassist). Together, the band is known as "KING'S LANDING". They are based in Vancouver.
Throughout his time spent as a live performer, Ill Tone has had the opportunity to open for and share the stage with such artists / groups as Talib Kweli, Tech N9ne & Krizz Kaliko, Xzibit, Digable Planets, Maestro Fresh Wes, Masta Ace, Tha Alkaholiks, Jeru the Damaja, Swollen Members, The Steadies (members of 'Mobadass' / 'Wide Mouth Mason'), The Boom Booms, Tipper, Sweatshop Union, Kyprios, Moka Only, PAC DIV, Sir Michael Rocks, bassist Rick May
