Nic Brown "SHIFT" is a Blade Runneresque EP of futuristic hip-hop courtesy of Friday Ricky Dred, whose pyroclastic flow is perfectly complemented by the neon lit, cyberbeat-backed production machinations of Big Tweez; his unexpected deployment, for example, of several soaring female soul samples, which glisten like emeralds when all around is murk and dread, is as masterfully handled as any big name producer could manage. I've lost count of the number of hip-hop albums and EPs of exceptional quality I've heard this year, but this shady, shifty and occasionally beautiful record is amongst the very best. Keep your eyes on Friday Ricky Dred; I've a feeling he's got a masterpiece within him if he gets to work so let's hope he does. Favorite track: No Cruise Control.
